3G Development in China August 23-29

- China Unicom announced on August 26 that the company is projected to launch iPhone 4 by year-end 2010 instead of September 2010 as previously reported, making iPhone 4 one of 10 Smartphones to be launched by the company by year-end 2010, the Sohu News reported on August 27. As for three major telecom operators' 3G investment in the first half of 2010, China Unicom had spent 33.32 billion RMB (US$ 4.9 billion) of a total of approximately 73.5 billion RMB (US$10.8 billion; U$1 = 6.8 RMB) as originally earmarked for 3G, mainly on 3G wireless and fixed-network construction; Of a total of approximately 44.0 billion RMB (US$ 6.47 billion) allocated for 3G by China Telecom, 60% of which had spent on fixed network construction; China Mobile had spent a total of 61.5 billion RMB (US$9.0 billion) on 3G network construction, according to the same source.

 

- On August 26, China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) announced on its website that the Ministry has issued 356 network access licenses as of mid-August 2010, including 33 TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) terminals, 26 of which were dual-mode TD-SCDMA/GSM phone models; 22 WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) terminals, 16 of which were WCDMA phone models; 32 CDMA terminals and 134 GSM terminals. In July, the MIIT issued a total of 485 network access licenses.
